The Life and Sufferings of Cecelia Mayo, Founded in Incidents of Real Life [Anonymous]
Boston: Published by M. Aurelius, 1843. Original green pictorial wrappers, 7.5 x 4.75 inches, 36 pages. Frontis, illus. First edition.
An early cheap crime novel, with women’s sexuality playing a key role: Cecelia Mayo, “seduced and abandoned at an early age, becomes an unregenerate whore who specializes in ruining young men” (Reynolds, Beneath the American Renaissance). The imprint, suggesting as it does a stoic reflection on misfortune, seems likely pseudonymous and suited to evade condemnation or even prosecution; the only other title under this imprint located on OCLC is the similar Life and Sufferings of Miss Emma Cole, published in 1844. Wrappers overstitched at the spine with thread at an early date. Wright I, 1663. Stained and somewhat worn; a good, sound copy.
Offered by Garrett Scott, Bookseller and found in their recent e-list "Occasional List #53: Tadpole Water."
