If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking. – Haruki Murakami
Who would argue with Haruki Murakami, the annual favorite to win the Nobel Prize in Literature? Not me, for sure; from the evidence of his novels, he’s clearly a very smart cookie. But, I would venture to add that if you want to understand what everyone else was thinking at a certain point in history, you should read the books that were popular at that time, and if you wish to understand a writer or thinker, read that books that they read.
ABAA members can help you there. Not only with books popular in the past and now forgotten, but often with the actual copies owned and read by literary or historical figures in the past, complete with their marginalia and inscriptions. From the de-rigueur inscriptions that publicists made authors add to review copies to heartfelt inscriptions from the author to good friends, you’ll find everything from the humblest reading copy to mouth-watering association copies in the catalogs of the members of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America.
